This is a selection of poems by Meera Ji, who initially struck litterateurs as odd, and whose poems contained ambiguity of a level not found earlier in Urdu poetry. Nevertheless, he was regarded as a successful editor, and his literary criticism has great clarity, forcing the literary establishment to have a second look at his poems. His odd manners made him the topic of character sketches by two of his most famous contemporaries: Manto and Chughtai. Shortly after his death, Meera Ji came to be regarded as the leading modern Urdu poet, and he became a veritable cult figure.
